Mercedes-Benz E300 (W213) Essential Owner’s Guide: Tips, Common Issues, and Solutions
Automobiles are often called the pinnacle of modern technology, integrating a vast array of innovations. Recently, with the increase in electronic equipment, various software, advanced sensors, and sophisticated hardware, cars have become more complex yet increasingly convenient to use.
However, this technological advancement also brings various glitches. Beyond just technical errors, I would like to share some simple yet crucial "pro-tips" from my experience with the E300 that you might regret not knowing.
All content is based on my personal experience and a compilation of posts and replies from the Naver Cafe "Club Benz" (https://cafe.naver.com/nfsclub12).
Please note that these are subjective views and may not be the definitive "correct" answer. Use this as a reference for vehicle purchase and maintenance. While written based on the E300, many points apply to other classes as well.
E300 Issues / Inconveniences / Tips Collection
1. Wiper Noise (Squeaking/Chattering)
* No single perfect solution exists, but here are the most common methods used to reduce this stressful noise:
> Apply Hair Conditioner - A useful tip to do occasionally. The downside is it requires manual effort.
> Manual Bending - There are tutorial videos on YouTube. Place your hand near the blade and slightly bend the wiper arm away from the glass. It’s a simple fix, but due to high tension, it may return to its original state over time. Doing this before driving on a rainy day is recommended.
> Request Dealer Adjustment - Some owners abroad solved this by asking the service center to adjust the wiper angle. It is unclear if all domestic centers provide this. Alternatively, you can request glass oil film removal or a wiper replacement (though new wipers don't guarantee silence).
> Replace with Different Models - Many users recommend the brand "MODEN" (모든) or Bosch W213 wipers.
2. Unable to Pull Away due to Collision Prevention Sensors
In cases where you enter a slope slowly or encounter a slight bump, the sensor may perceive it as an imminent collision and prevent the car from moving even when pressing the accelerator.
This usually happens on inclines where the car refuses to move forward. I’ve experienced this once, and S-Class owners have reported it too. I believe it’s due to the low chassis and sensitive sensors detecting the ground/bumps.
> Solution: Don't panic. Reverse slightly, then move forward with a bit more speed/momentum.
3. Back Pain After Driving
Some complain of discomfort due to the slightly awkward positioning of the brake and accelerator pedals.
> Optimize by continuously adjusting the seat position and utilizing the lumbar support to find your "sweet spot."
> It varies by individual; I felt it more during the first 3 months due to tension and adapting to the pedal positions. Some people never adapt and end up selling the vehicle.
4. Using Auto Hold
> Are you still keeping your foot on the brake at red lights? Once stopped, press the brake pedal deeper and firmer until the "HOLD" indicator appears on the dashboard. It's like a quick "double-tap" or a sharp pull in billiards.
> Great for preventing rolling on slopes or during long signal waits. (Though for long stops, shifting to P is safer).
> *Caution: Be careful not to step on the gas accidentally while practicing. There have been reports of accidents due to misuse.
5. Easy Access (Exiting)
> If you crack the door open slightly before getting out and wait a moment, the seat adjusts to make exiting easier.
> However, you have to wait for the seat to move. For many fast-paced drivers, they usually exit the car before the seat even finishes moving, making the feature feel somewhat redundant.
6. On Extremely Cold or Hot Days
> Remote start is available via the Mercedes me app (Climate control must be set to "AUTO" beforehand). The car will cool/heat to your previous settings.
> For security, the engine shuts off as soon as you open the door. This is a normal anti-theft design. Simply restart the engine once inside.
7. When It's Too Hot and You Didn't Use Remote Start
> Press and hold the "Unlock" button on your remote to open all windows and the sunroof simultaneously to let the heat out.
8. When You Turn Off the Engine but Forgot to Close Windows
> Press and hold the "Lock" button on your remote to close all windows and the sunroof at once.
9. Heater Blowing Cold Air Even at High Temperature Settings
> This can happen in "AUTO" mode (some say it's to prevent drowsiness). If this occurs, switch to manual mode.
10. Side Mirrors Not Folding After Locking from Outside
> Manually fold and unfold the mirrors once from the inside, then try locking from the outside again to fix the glitch.
11. Center (Right) Screen Won't Turn On
> You might have accidentally pressed the center power button. This is a normal function. Tap the power button in the center console to turn it back on.
> If it still doesn't work, long-press the power button to force a reboot. This is the official troubleshooting advice provided by Mercedes Concierge.
12. iOS Apple CarPlay Connection Issues
> Replace the cable with an original Apple genuine cable.
> Ensure your iOS is updated. (This was a common issue 1-2 years ago; 2020+ models are generally stable).
12-1. How to Skip Songs Easily
> While using CarPlay, use Siri: Long-press the voice command button on the steering wheel or use "Hey Siri" and say "Next song." (Can be a bit awkward if guests are in the car!)
> While CarPlay is active, select "Media" on the left instrument cluster using the steering wheel buttons. Once the track info is displayed, you can swipe up or down on the left steering wheel touchpad to skip.
13. Headlight Condensation
> The manual states this can happen. It might be startling after a car wash or on a rainy day, but it usually clears up on its own and is considered normal.
> However, if water is pooling or doesn't clear for a long time, make a service center appointment.
14. Premium (High-Octane) Fuel
> If you plan to keep the car for a long time or are sensitive to performance/engine health: Use Premium.
> If you lease/trade frequently, don't feel the difference, or find finding premium gas stations stressful: Regular is fine.
*There is no right answer; it is a personal choice.
15. Key Locked Inside the Car
> Although rare, it has happened. Don't panic—you can unlock the doors using the Mercedes me app.
15-1. Bonus: Locking the Key Inside Intentionally
(e.g., when someone else moves your car and parks it for you): You can lock the car via the Mercedes me app even if the key is inside. Once locked via the app, the doors cannot be opened from the outside. I have tested this myself.
*Note: The Mercedes me service can occasionally go offline, so having a spare key nearby is recommended for this trick.
16. Tire Pressure Warning Light
> There is an emergency tire repair and inflator kit under the trunk floor. It's quite easy to use.
> I’ve used it twice; simply connect it to the cigarette lighter socket to pump air. (Do not use the sealant cylinder unless there is a puncture; just use the air compressor part).
> You can check pressure on the dash or via the app. It's a loud but effective way to fix pressure without visiting a shop.
17. Sensors
> Often a bit laggy. I consider this a "chronic symptom."
> If you get a "Sensor Unavailable" message while driving, it could be environmental factors, dirt on the sensor, or a temporary glitch. Usually, it returns to normal on its own.
> Check for debris on the sensors at a rest stop. If the sensors are consistently too sensitive, the dealer can adjust the sensitivity levels.
18. Regular Service (Maintenance)
> During the warranty period, you can use the free "Pick-up & Delivery" service. A representative will come to pick up your car and return it after service. This saves a lot of time.
> If you visit in person, you might receive a random satisfaction survey via text/email afterward—sometimes these come with gifts/prizes.
19. Trunk Opening in Mechanical Parking Towers (Risk of Damage)
> There have been cases of damage. Try to avoid mechanical parking if possible. If damage occurs, it is almost impossible to get a warranty claim (usually blamed on user error).
> While it doesn't happen to everyone, be extremely cautious. Some say double-clicking the "Lock" button on the key disables the foot sensor, but this isn't fully verified.
> Some owners even use scotch tape to secure the trunk to the bumper when using these towers (it's embarrassing, but safer!). I personally suspect it's a sensor glitch.
Recommended Supplies/Products
*I haven't tried all of these personally. If any information is incorrect, please let me know.
1. Brake Pads
: Sangsin Hagen, Lichten (Commonly used for less dust/noise).
2. Removing Scratches on the Center Console
: Polywatch.
3. Washer Fluid:
*Warning: Avoid rain-repellent (water-beading) coatings as they can clog sensors/pumps. Use standard ethanol fluid.
Recommended: Sonax The View (Blue), 3M Ethanol (Good value).
> You can also ask for a free top-up during a service center visit.
4. Liquid Wax: Water Gold CC, Sonax BSD (Brilliant Shine Detailer).
5. Buffing Towels: Any microfiber. Bulk packs from Costco or Traders work fine.
6. Wheel Cleaner: Sonax Extreme (Iron removers work best; cheap ones aren't very effective for Benz brake dust).
7. Engine Oil (Gasoline): Mobil 1 Protection 0w20 or 0w30, ZIC (5w-30).
8. Drying Towels: Rainbow 003 Drying Towel.
9. Buffing/Utility Towels: Purestar Speed Polish, KLiN, Costco/Traders microfiber towels.
10. Tar Removal: Standard sticker/tar remover from any mart.
11. Tires: Majesty 9 (Quiet, durable), Pirelli P Zero All Season (Performance all-season).
> Generally, any reputable domestic or international brand will perform well.
That's it for now!
