[Review] Meeting the LG Gram 16 (16Z90P-GA5WK): Unboxing and Optimization Tips

Hi there! I'm Kitle.

Today, I’m reviewing the LG Gram. I’ve always heard great things about the Gram series—known for being incredibly light yet packing decent performance—and I’m excited to finally use one for the first time.

Let’s start with which model I chose and the reasons behind my decision.

Choosing the Model: 16Z90P-GA5WK (Size & Specs)

LG Gram Size Comparison

I decided on the 16-inch size. The biggest strength of the LG Gram is its portability. Despite the large screen, the bezels are so thin that the overall footprint doesn't feel bulky. I find that laptops 13 inches or smaller feel too "short" vertically, which leads to excessive scrolling and isn't ideal for document work. If you only do light web browsing or want something ultra-compact, a smaller size might work, but for productivity, the 16-inch is a winner.

For the CPU, I chose the i5 model. Since the core performance across this specific lineup is consistent, it was a straightforward choice. The real decision was between 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD vs. 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD.

Most people might lean toward the former for general home use or online classes. However, I occasionally run heavy software and like to keep my devices for a long time. To ensure smooth performance years down the road, I went with the higher spec model (the one on the far left of the catalog).

Final Choice: 16Z90P-GA5WK

The Purchase Experience

While online shopping is usually cheaper, I found that offline prices weren't significantly different, so I bought mine at a physical store. I wanted to avoid any potential issues with "Non-OS" models or products being tampered with during third-party upgrades. Plus, buying offline gave me the peace of mind of seeing the product in person.

The store offered a good discount, and I even got some freebies. I decided that if the price was within my expected range, I’d buy it on the spot—and it was!

LG Gram Freebies

For the extras, I received a wireless mouse, a desk pad, and an Office Value Pack. I also got some additional gifts from the LG Best Shop. While you could compare prices at Hi-Mart or Electro Land, I stuck with the official Best Shop for this purchase.

LG Gram 16 Unboxing

Now, let’s open the box!

LG Gram Box

The staff helped me verify the model name and confirmed that the factory seal was intact. It’s always satisfying to know you're the first one opening it.

Unboxing LG Gram

The unboxing experience felt very clean and premium—almost reminiscent of a certain "fruit-branded" laptop store.

LG Gram Ports Right Side

On the right side, there is a Kensington lock for security, two USB ports, and a microSD card slot. This slot is incredibly useful for moving files from dashcams or cameras without needing to hunt for an adapter.

LG Gram Ports Left Side

On the left side, we have an HDMI port for external monitors and two USB-C ports. These ports also handle charging. Having both USB types is a great move by LG. Also, while wireless is the norm now, having a headphone jack is still a huge plus for stable audio during video calls or interviews.

LG Gram Charger

The power adapter and cable are quite sleek. Laptop chargers used to be bulky and unattractive, but this one looks great even in a coffee shop.

Charging LED

When charging, a small LED indicator appears. I like that it’s tiny and subtle—it doesn't distract you while you're working.

Trackpad and Keyboard

The trackpad has a darker tone, which I initially thought was a protective film, but it's just the design. The touch feel is light, though I'll likely use a mouse for most tasks.

Power On

Time to hit the power button and set everything up!

Booting & BIOS Update

Let's optimize this Gram.

Keyboard Skin

Quick note: it comes with a matching keyboard skin that fits perfectly. After booting, the LG Update program automatically suggested a BIOS update. It’s good to see LG actively managing post-launch bugs and performance improvements.

Checking Specs & Performance

Storage Check

First, the hard drive. I bought the 512GB model, but it shows 456GB of usable space. This isn't a mistake—it's just how storage is calculated by the OS. With pre-installed software taking up about 56GB, there is roughly 400GB of free space, which is plenty for standard work.

RAM Check

Next, the RAM. In Settings > System, it correctly shows 16GB. Everything is exactly as it should be.

How to Optimize Your LG Gram 16

I recommend turning off unnecessary background programs to boost speed. While this might slightly change how the "default" LG experience works, the speed gain is worth it. You can always turn these back on later.

Go to Start > Search "msconfig" > Task Manager > Startup.

Startup Optimization

  • Microsoft OneDrive: If you don't use it, disable it. It starts automatically and consumes memory.
  • Reader Mode: LG's eye comfort software. Disable it if you don't need the screen to adjust for reading.
  • "Meet Now" icon: You probably won't use it, so hide it.

Next, go to Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.

Uninstalling Software

  • McAfee: This is a 30-day trial. I recommend removing it and using the free, built-in Windows Defender.
  • LG Gram SW: You can disable the startup of these utilities in the system tray to keep things snappy.

Final Thoughts

Pros: The LG Gram 16 is remarkably light and performs exceptionally well. While it’s not the cheapest option, the quality justifies the price for students and office workers. The design is sleek, the adapter is pretty, and it's fast.

Cons: The finish around the webcam area feels a bit minor in terms of premium touch. I also wish the keyboard and trackpad felt a little more "high-end."

Overall, I’m very happy with it and hope it lasts a long time!
